Smart layers are in Photoshop when importing line art (vector files). These layers are ‘smart’ because whether you scale them large or small they retain their resolution. It’s my understanding this is proprietary to Adobe and that smart layers convert to pixels when imported into any other graphics app (Pixelmator, Affinity, etc). So they no longer scale and retain their resolution. This was annoying during my transition from Photoshop to Pixelmator in the beginning but after a few weeks of using Pixelmator you find other ways to import vector files if you must... or just use high resolution line art. The message you are getting is telling you the smart layers are not supported but the art is still there in pixels.
