Clipping mask removes border from shape

It's probably really simple but I';m looking to create the pattern in the linked video, but when I use the clipping mask it removes part of the border around the shape - is there any way to keep that border?

Hey there, that's the way clipping masks work, but what I would do is duplicate the original bottom layer, put it above all the other layers and set its fill to None, keeping just the stroke. Here's what that would look like:

Hah, no need to hang your head in shame, clipping masks are conceptually confusing, it honestly took me a few years to start intuitively understanding how they work. And when there's a little bit of confusion, the simple solutions become much easier to miss!
