Also, an external database and a completely external, decoupled from the ipad editing would be beneficial.
An image viewer would also be optimal.
Thus, one could also manage and edit larger libraries.

As we're using the native Files app for file management, whether you can use NAS drives depends on how they function with iOS. Without having that specific drive to hand, it's a little tricky to make any kind of claims about functionality. Have you had an opportunity to try it out yourself?
As for an image viewer, do you mean image previewing when browsing folders?
This would probably fall mostly under improved file management and there are two possible ways to do that — either closer integration with the Photos library or improvement of the Files-based approach. We're going to be exploring both these options in the future.
