can't get edit with Pixelmator pro to work

clicking on an image and selecting 'edit with Pixelmator pro' from either Photomator or photos opens Pixelmator but with no image, do I have a permissions issue or have I got some incorrect settings? Using latest versions of apps on M1 machine
