Photomator library

I'm new here so sorry for a dumb question; can't find the answer in the forums.

I have all my photos on a (Synology) NAS & use the Synology browser to view them. I don't use Apple Photos so the library is empty.
How do I edit & view these photos in Photomator? Do I just drag & drop the NAS photo folder into it? Is the contents of this folder then copied onto my iMac into the Apple Photo library?
I just want a single library (on my NAS) that I can view & edit through Photomator without copying everything onto my iMac & creating an Apple Photos library. Is this possible?
