Forced to select extra layers

Hi, I'm a newbie user of Pixelmator Pro on Mac and though I'm finding it really helpful to create art sources for paintings, I just can't figure out the layer selection process. When I want to edit a single layer out of three or four layers, instead of the chosen tool it gives this message: "Some of the selected layers are hidden, reveal them to edit." If I select the other layers the edit tool shows up but not for the layer I want it for. I've been successful a few times by randomly selecting combinations of layers but it takes so much time. I've tried all the selection options from the menu such as auto select, group select, etc. None of them solve this problem. Thanks for any ideas on what could be happening.

Ok I just discovered my own error. I thought just ticking the box next to the layer name was enough to select it for editing. Now I discovered that I also have to click on it as well so it becomes the highlighted one. So much easier now!
